Hanoi University of Industry Organizes Patent Training in Engineering, Natural Sciences and Technology

On the morning of August 6, 2026, Hanoi University of Industry (HaUI), in collaboration with the Intellectual Property Office of Vietnam (IP Viet Nam), organized a training program on patent protection in the fields of engineering, natural sciences, and technology. The program aimed to provide HaUI staff, researchers and students with knowledge of the intellectual property system and procedures for establishing patent rights, as well as skills in patent information searching and exploitation. Participants were also guided in preparing patent applications and drafting patent specifications.

Attending the program on behalf of Hanoi University of Industry were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Dong, Vice President of HaUI; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Trong Chuong, Head of the Board of Science, Technology and Innovation; representatives of functional boards; leaders of HaUI’s affiliated units; and a large number of staff members, researchers, research-group members and students. Representing IP Viet Nam, MSc. Trinh Ngoc Long, a patent examination expert, delivered the training sessions and shared practical experience in patent protection.

In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Trong Chuong emphasized that, as innovation and technology transfer increasingly serve as key drivers of scientific and technological development, patents are not only an indicator of research capacity but also an important mechanism for protecting, exploiting and commercializing research outcomes. In recent years, Hanoi University of Industry has recorded encouraging achievements in scientific research. However, the number of patent applications and granted patents, particularly in engineering, natural sciences and technology, has yet to fully reflect the potential of its researchers and research groups. One contributing factor is that many lecturers and researchers still face difficulties in identifying the patentability of research outcomes, preparing patent applications, and effectively using patent information to support research and development.

Following the opening remarks by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Trong Chuong, MSc. Trinh Ngoc Long delivered Session 1, providing an overview of the intellectual property system and patent protection. The session introduced major categories of intellectual property rights, patentability requirements and principles, patent application processing procedures, and relevant legal provisions. The speaker also explained key patentability criteria, including novelty, inventive step and industrial applicability, giving participants a comprehensive understanding of the process for establishing patent rights.

In Session 2, MSc. Trinh Ngoc Long provided guidance on patent information searching and patent specification drafting for technical solutions in engineering, natural sciences and technology. The session focused on identifying core technical features, conducting patent searches, preparing patent applications, and drafting patent specifications in accordance with applicable requirements. Through practical examples and hands-on exercises, participants developed skills in assessing patentability and refining patent applications, thereby enhancing the value and protectability of scientific research outcomes.

The discussion session featured active exchanges, with staff members, researchers and research groups raising questions about application fees, patent processing timelines, substantive examination requirements, conditions for patent grants, and key considerations when preparing patent applications. Drawing on practical cases, MSc. Trinh Ngoc Long addressed common concerns and shared experience in patent information searching, drafting claims and preparing patent specifications. The discussion helped participants consolidate their knowledge, strengthen patent-application skills and make more effective use of research outcomes, thereby supporting stronger patent protection and the development of HaUI’s intellectual property assets.

The training program equipped staff members, researchers and students with essential knowledge and practical skills in patent protection, contributing to stronger capacity for exploiting, managing and developing intellectual property assets in scientific research. Participants were updated on relevant legal provisions and gained practical skills in patent information searching and patent application preparation, helping to increase both the quantity and quality of Hanoi University of Industry’s intellectual property assets. The program also represented a concrete step in implementing HaUI’s strategy for science, technology and innovation by linking research with intellectual property protection, technology transfer and the commercialization of research outcomes.
